John Benet

(fl.1430-50)

English composer whose music was known on the Continent, and is found in the Trent Codices. In 1443-4(9), Master of Choristers of St. Anthony's Hospital (London). In 1448-49, a member of the Confraternity of St. Nicholas (London). His motets illustrate the use of total isorhythm, and his Mass movements, which contrast a declamatory style in settings of the Gloria with a more melismatic one in Sanctus and Agnus settings, mark an important stage in the development of the cyclic Mass (the complete Ordinary). These are all àà 3; his sonorous 4-part Kyrie trope Deus Creator has two strict canonic and two untexted parts and shows great technical skill.
