Josquin Baston

(fl. 1542-63)

Franco-Flemish composer. He may have served at the Polish court 1552-3, and also at the Danish and Swedish courts a few years later. His chanson-motets combine expressiveness and charm with expert use of devices such as canon; in his 6-part lament on the death of an unidentified 'Lupus' the two middle voices repeat the Gregorian Requiem chant in canon six times with different counterpoints. He also composed French chansons.
