Johannes Lupi (Leleu)

(c1506 - 1539)

Franco-Flemish composer. He was a choirboy at Cambrai cathedral, a singer there from 1526, and choirmaster from the following year, though his tenure was beset by difficulties and illness. He issued a volume of motets à 4-8 and further motets, three Masses and twenty-six chansons in anthologies. His chansons are often in a serious contrapuntal idiom, though with clear cadences and short phrase-lengths.
