Matthaeus Pipelare

(fl. c1500)

Franco-Flemish composer. In 1498-1500 he taught singing at the brotherhood of Our Lady at 's-Hertogenbosch. His few Masses, motets and Magnificats survive in MS and in printed anthologies. His chanson Fors seulementis based on that of Ockeghem; it appeared in Kotter's keyboard tablature and provided the model for a Mass by Gombert. His Masses show ingenious craftsmanship, while his motet Memorare mater Christiis for seven voices, symbolising the seven sorrows of the Virgin and appropriately built on the tenor of a Spanish villancico Nunca fué pena mayor.
