Ennemond (Vieux) Gaultier

(ca.1575 - 1651)

French lutenist and composer. Called "le vieux Gaultier" to distinguish him from his younger cousin Denis. Served as page to the Duchess of Montmorency in Languedoc, then as valet de chambre to Maria de Medici, Henri IV's queen, from 1600; upon her exile in 1631 he left Paris. Though his works (with those of his cousin) constitute a corpus of music influencing both other lutenists and later clavecinistes, they were not published during his lifetime; Denis brought out some of them in 1672.
