Jehan Chardavoine

(1538 - ca. 1580)

French music editor and perhaps composer. In 1576 at Paris he published a book of voix de ville. Monophonic melodies are provided for 190 strophic poems, including both anonymous works and texts by poets such as Ronsard, Baïf, and Du Bellay. Many of his melodies are adapted from polyphonic settings published in the mid-sixteenth century; but some may have been composed by Chardavoine himself.
