Printer and composer, born in southern France. He began printing music in Venice in 1538 using movable type and a single impression, as did Attaingnant. He and his rival Girolamo Scotto between them virtually monopolized Italian music printing for three decades. His publications include works of many types, particularly madrigals and a smaller number of Masses and motets, by composers from Italy, the Netherlands, France. Spain, Germany, and the imperial court. Among his own compositions, most printed by Moderne and Le Roy & Ballard, are nearly seventy chansons, two Masses, and seven motets. His sons Alessandro and Angelo were also music printers. The firm used the Italian spelling Gardano from 1557.
