Pierre Sandrin (real name Regnault)

(fl. 1538-60)


French composer, who may have been a comic actor in early life. Became court composer to Fran¸ois I of France around 1543, and in 1554 served in the entourage of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este of Ferrara. Many of his chansons became famous; Lassus based the most dignified of his chanson Masses on Sandrin's beautiful and dignified Doulce memoire.
