Kaspar Ulenberg

(1549 - 1617)

German ecclesiastic. Originally a Lutheran pastor, he became a Catholic in 1575 and rose rapidly from priest in Kaiserswerth (Düsseldorf) to Rector of Köln University (1592-1615). He made a German translation of the psalms with tunes, which was still being reprinted in 1710; 3-part settings of these melodies were made by Lassus. He also translated the Bible and wrote catechetical works.
