João (John) IV

(1604 - 1656)

Joćo (John) IV

King of Portugal (from 1640). Though the wellknown motets ascribed to him may not in fact be his work, he was a well-trained musician, writing a defense of modern music and collecting a huge library (destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755) of music by all the leading late sixteenth and early seventeenth century composers.
