Edward Gibbons

(1568-ca. 1650)

English composer and organist. Son of William Gibbons ("The Elder"), and brother of Orlando Gibbons, whose teacher he reportedly was. BMus (Cambridge) 1588(?). BMus (Oxford) 1592(?). Appointed lay-clerk of King's College Chapel (Cambridge) in the 1590s. Master of the Choristers of King's College (Cambridge) 1594-90. Lay-clerk of Exeter Cathedral 1598-9(9). Organist of Salisbury Cathedral 159(9)-1602. Choirmaster of Exeter Cathedral 160(8)-44. Appointed priest-vicar of Exeter Cathedral 1609. Appointed "Custos of ye College of Lay-Vicars" 1611. Succentor of Exeter Cathedral from 1615(?). One keyboard (organ) piece extant in MS. Madrigal in The Triumphes of Oriana (1603)
