John Marbeck

(ca 1510 - ca 1585)

English composer and organist. Organist for St. George's Chapel in 1541. In 1543, Marbeck, with three other men, fell victim to a heresy hunt in Windsor and was condemned to death. While the others were all burned at the stake, Marbeck was reprieved by the intervention of influential friends. John Marbeck produced the first musical setting for the English liturgy, publishing The Booke of Common Praier Noted (1549). Joint organist with Thomas Pattrick of St George's Chapel 1558-59
