Thomas Simpson (Sympson) (1)

English composer and string player. In service of the Elector Palatine (Heidelberg)1608-15. In service of the Count Ernest III of Holstein-Schaumburg (Bückeburg) 1615-22. In service of Christian IV at the Danish Court (Copenhagen) 1622-28. One of the most important English instrumental composers working on the Continent, he published two volumes of dances (one also contains items by John Dowland, John Farmer and Thomas Tomkins) which helped to influence the development of the German suite; his style is more tuneful and Italianate than that of Brade.
