Italian composer. In the 1540s he worked
at Bergamo and Trent, but in 1549 was called to the Electoral
court of Saxony at Dresden, where he became vice-
Kapellmeister
in 1566 and full
Kapellmeister
in 1568. He revisited Italy on many occasions, including
during Dresden's plague year of 1567. His publications comprise
German songs, both sacred and secular, and two books of
Canzone Napoletane
which were the first music to exclusively Italian texts to
appear in Germany. His
St John Passion
1561) exemplifies the mixed style of historia in which only
the Evangelist's part is set in chant, while his
Osterliche Freude
(1568) is an important prototype for
Schütz
's
Easter Historia.
