Antonio Valente

(fl. 1565-80)

Italian (or possibly Spanish) organist and composer. He was blind, and from 1565 to 1580 was organist at S. Angelo a Nilo (or Nido) in Naples. His Intavolatura of 1576, written in an unusual number notation, contains the earliest known written-out fantasia for keyboard, imitative ricercars, and variations which use stereotyped figurations. He also published a volume of canons for organ, Versi spirituali (Naples, 1580).
