Alessandro Della Ciaia

(ca. 1605 - ca. 1670)

Italian nobleman and composer. Although an amateur and a dilettante, he published three opus numbers that demonstrated that he was an original and fully capable composer of both expert polyphony and expressive solo writing. His status, however, possibly explains their leisurely appearance: a collection of madrigals in 1636, a book of lamenti and motets for voice and continuo in 1650, and finally, the Sacri modulatus in 1666.
