Giovanni Battista Bovicelli

(c.1550-after 1594)

Italian composer, singer and music theoretician. Born in Assisi, he was a member of the choir of Milan cathedral. He published a manual on the vocal ornamentation of madrigals and motets under the title Regole, passaggi di musica, madrigali et motetti passegiati (Venice 1594). The treatise covers methods of ornamenting various melodic units and also such matters as text underlay, articulation, and techniques of virtuous singing. He applies elaborate embellishments to works by Palestrina, Rore, Victoria, and Claudio da Corregio.
