German composer. Studied in Italy; Kapellmeister to the Hohenlohe court at Weikersheirn (near Würzburg) 1614-35; cathedral organist and Kapellmeister at Frankfurt from 1637 and Kapellmeister in Hanau from 1642. He published some psalms and sacred songs, but his most important work is the 2-volume Studentengärtlein (1605, 1613) which initiated a tradition of simple strophic secular songs for students.
