Spanish composer and guitarist, After receiving a Bachelor of Theology degree from the University of Salamanca be traveled to Italy, where he studied music. Upon his return to Spain he published his Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española (1674), a detailed treatise for a 5-course guitar tuned a/a-d'/d'-g/g-b/b-e'. Included are an introductory tutor, an essay on figured bass accompaniment for guitar, and 90 pieces which range in difficulty and are mostly based on dance forms, such as the folia, canario, and españoleta. The popularity of Sanz's work continued well into the 18th century and inspired several similar works in Spain.
