Leonardo Vinci

Italian composer. He studied with Gaetano Greco at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo from 1708. In 1719 he was maestro di cappellato the Prince of Sansevero, and from 1725 until his death was pro-vicemaestro of the royal chapel. He wrote at least three operas a year between 1722 and 1730, and probably traveled to Venice, Parma, Rome, and Naples to direct their premieres. In summer 1728 he became maestro di cappella at the Conservatorio dei Poveri di Gesù Cristo, where Pergolesi was one of his pupils. In addition to some forty operas, Vinci wrote a few cantatas, sonatas, a serenata, and an oratorio. Of the operas, his commedie were composed between 1719 and 1724, and the opere serie date from between 1722 and 1730 (Le zite 'n galera, Venice, 3 Jan. 1722; Silla dittatore, Naples, 19 Oct. 1723; L'Astianatte, Naples, 2 Dec. 1725; Didone abbandonata, Naples, 14 Jan. 1726; La caduta dei Decemviri, Naples, I Oct. 1727; Artaserse,Rome, 4 Feb. 1730).
