Jean Gilles

(1668-1705)

French composer, born in Tarascon. He was a student and the successor of Poitevin as maître de musique of the Cathedral of st Saveur in Aix-en-Provence. He was named to the same post at Agde Cathedral in 1697, where he remained until his death despite an appointment at Avignon. His Messe des morts was widely performed, including as late as 1764 at Rameau's funeral, and in 1774 at that of Louis XV. Other works include a Mass and motets for various vocal and instrumental forces.
