Musicians in Rehearsal

Germany (18th Century)

Musicians in Rehearsal

This anonymous Eighteenth Century engraving is in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg. One can observe that the instrumentalists read from music desks, while the singers hold their parts. The man at the end seems to be conducting with a scroll, but the folio in his left hand contains a Christian motto or perhaps the title of a cantata, rather than music notation. Note that the violins are not held under the chin.
