Ludwig August Lebrun

(1752 - 1790)

Ludwig August Lebrun

Oboist and composer. His father, possibly Belgian, was oboist at the Mannheim court from at least 1747. By 1764 the twelve-year-old Ludwig August, who had been studying oboe with his father, was already playing with the court orchestra on occasion; he became a full member in 1767. After Ludwig's marriage to the soprano Franziska Danzi, the couple toured extensively: Milan, Paris, London, Vienna, Prague, Naples, and Berlin. He was praised for his sweet tone and is reported to have extended the upper range of the instrument beyond the standard of the day. He composed incidental music; concertos and chamber works with oboe.
