Ein Hubsch new Gesangbuch

(Ulm: 1538)

Ein Hubsch new Gesangbuch

This is probably the only copy of what is believed to be the first Protestant hymn-book, produced for the use of the Moravian brotherhood known as the Picards. This copy, now in the Euing Music Collection of the library of the University of Glasgow, Scotland, belonged to Johann Sebastian Bach, whose son Carl Philipp Emanuel presented it to Dr Charles Burney. On Burney's death in 1814 it became the property of John Stafford Smith (thought to be the composer of the tune to which The Star-spangled banner is set), after whose death in 1836 it was acquired by W.H. Havergal, who sold it to Euing in 1869.
