François Couperin (1)

(ca 1631-1708/12)

French organist, and harpsichordist. Son of Charles Couperin (ca. 1595--1654), and brother of Louis Couperin. His main distinction seems to have been that he was 'un grand ivrogne' ('a good drinking man'). He is mentioned mainly because some of his nephew François Couperin, ["le grand"]'s compositions have mistakenly been attributed to him. His daughter, Marguerite-Louise (1676/9-1728), was an excellent singer.
